I’ll admit it. We fell into the same trap that every magazine and blog on the planet did. The self-indulgent, we-know-what-you-should-like-better-than-you-do Best Albums of 2010 list. Here at TDOA headquarters, we’d like to think that we’ve given you some names that weren’t familiar and provided you with some surprises. But at the end of the day, who better to assess the state of music than the musicians themselves? So, we reached out to every band that we interviewed in 2010 and asked them to give us their favorite albums of the year. Below is the lengthy list that we compiled, thanks to their overwhelming response. The verdict? 2010 was a tremendous year and a great way to start a new decade. We’ve already heard a number of new releases for 2011 and can tell you that next year may be even better.
We’ve been fortunate this year, to have our readership increase to put us in the same stratosphere as the cool kids. We’re thankful for the support of our readers, the bands and the publicity firms that work to promote great music that fight the tide of “dumbing” that pervades the music scene. Rhydian Dafydd- The Joy Formidable
1. Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
Perhaps more of a grower than Funeral or Neon Bible, but another beautiful , dynamic body of work by the Canadian virtuosos.
It’s a carefully thought out record, the sequence of tracks feels very considered, the structure taking on almost classical structure with themes repeating and haunting opener ‘The Suburbs’ (a hauntingly beautiful struggle with modernity) being reprised at the end of the album. Regine Chassagne’s voice ( something I consider their secret weapon) is magnificent on Sprawl II (Mountains beyond Mountains) and her vocal is one of many instrumental twists and nuances that make this album compelling, progressive and our stereo, played very repeatedly.
2. LCD Soundsystem – This Is Happening
Tough to top ‘Sound Of Silver’?! Well, James Murphy gave it a damn good shot here. This Is Happening is darker, occasionally paranoid and it reveals the voice of a leader and a lyricist capable of emotional breadth. We’ve got fond memories of listening to this on the tour bus when we were travelling through Canada. It seemed the perfect companion. But you can play it anywhere and it still sounds great.
3. The Black Keys – Brothers
Direct, re-energised; this is the ‘fuck yeah’ album of the year for us. I don’t know if working with Danger Mouse brought a new edge to their sound but we love the crunch on Dan Auerbach’s guitar, the no nonsense approach and the ever-present hooks. We smile and swing our hair around a lot to this record. Favourite highlight: ‘Next Girl’. Yum.
4. Plan B – The Defamation Of Strickland Banks
This record is a breath of fresh air in 2010. It’s fresh, soulful , lyrically and vocally moving and the vintage production sounds great. The genre feels reignited, it’s not too polished and the ambitious aim to make visuals for each track is right up our street.
5. Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Once again, Kanye creates an audacious soundtrack that puts many of his peers to shame. Forget the bullshit, the rants, the drama; if we’re talking about the music this latest offering feels more confident, more experimental, more bombastic, even more frenetic. But it seems to work. It could easily have gone too far but, instead of disjointed, the collaborations are tantalising (Bon Iver, John Legend, Kid Cudi…….), the references are colourful and the ridiculously honest lyrics make for an entertaining ride. ‘Let’s have a toast for the douchebags’!

Si Rider – Einstellung
1. Monster Magnet – “Mastermind”. Strong, heavy riffs and big production make for a real return to form after the previous album “4-Way Diablo” and its attempt to branch out into territories that Dave Wyndorf simply can’t compete. God bless Monster Magnet.
2. Crocodiles – “Sleep Forever”. Yes, they sound like The Marychain. Yes, they show their influences on their sleeves. Who cares? Reverb drenched, bubblegum psychedelia will always have its place. Good on ‘em.
3. Black Mountain – “Wilderness Heart”. The only Black Mountain album I have but I’ll be after more. Psychedelic acid rock blues has always been dear to my heart and Black Mountain prove its continual importance.
4. Grinderman – “2″. This is just down right dirty. I missed the first album mainly cos I never really got Nick Cave even though I was a big Birthday Party fan. The guitar reminds me more of the Birthday Party then the Bad Seeds. I’ll be looking for the first album.
5. Soundgarden – “Telephantasm”. Essentially a ‘best of’ retrospective, you could be forgiven for wondering why this has been released. Okay they’ve got back together and maybe it’s the easiest thing to do? I don’t care, it flows really well, has a couple of unreleased live tracks, an unreleased studio track, a DVD full of possibly some of the cheesiest ‘rock-gods’ videos the cool side of Bon Jovi and a lovely fold-out digipak sleeve which I’m a sad old sucker for every time!

Steve Hough – Einstellung
1. Deftones – “Diamond Eyes”. Far and away my fave this year, an awesome ride.
2. Amusement Parks On Fire – “Road Eyes”. Epic shoegaze.
3. The Dillinger Escape Plan – “Option Paralysis”. Exhausting but satisfying.
4. Torche – “Songs For Singles”. Stripped down and direct pop rockers. (might be classed as a mini LP though).
5. Tweak Bird- Self Titled. Just because it makes me smile.

I look at a decade full of personal top ten lists and wonder if things are really getting worse every year? Stopped reading those lists in magazines a long time ago. When I heard this seven inch it felt like watching a beach full of springbreak zombies and someone drops a bomb with icewater on them. Wake up, world. Rat Eyes defines the new era of hardcore.
2. Swans – My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky
Didn’t catch one of their shows as I was on tour pretty much the whole year. Great to have them back.
3. Salem – Asia
Nothing that new but it’s awesome music after all. Good name, that’s half the rent right there I guess. I wish they were staying more underground and the hipsters would have NOT discovered them. But who cares…
4. Merzbow & Balazs Pandi – live 12″
Balazs gave me this vinyl. Fucking amazing stuff. Balazs is a drummer who played with Venetian Snares and many others. Merzbow is god anyway. So bring both together and you have a rare piece of brutal energy on black wax.
5. Gatekeeper – Giza EP
I am really into synths music – who would have guessed… This is very good because these guys (I assume these are guys) know their machines. If you do 80ties synth stuff, do it well.
6. Steve Aoki – Brrrat (Polydor Remix)
Saw the guy DJ in Tokyo the first time, great energy… This is refreshing when you are based in Berlin like me and have to listen to that minimal Hawtin rubbish all the time.
7. IAMX – Terrified (Alec Empire remix)
I liked the original, so I was surprised when Alec played me the remix he did of the song. I like remixes that change the song completely.
8. The Knife – Tomorrow, in a Year
This is as mainstream as I get.
9. CX Kidtronik – Let’s Go Crazy (Stones Throw)
The new guy in Atari Teenage Riot. What an insane trip this whole year has been for us. A year ago Alec and him wrote this track, CX wanted me to lay some vocals on here, like riot grrl style. It took some time to come out, as it was one of the first tracks from his album he was recording. There are two sides to hip hop these days, the commercial horrible stuff that gets played at Glastonbury festival or something, then the very very underground stuff which is more imaginary than anything else out there. Watch out…
10. Sleigh Bells – Infinity Guitars
I kind of like this band. I hope they’re still around after the 2011 backlash. Sometimes I imagine I found a 7 inch vinyl of this in some small indie record store in Newcastle or something…

We toured with this band a lot early in the year when our album came out and we had to wait a few months for them to get signed and finally get the album out. They’re my favourite live band in England right now without a doubt.
2. Women – Public Strain
My bandmate Laura got me into these guys – we got back from tour and she went to see them in London and immediately called me shouting, “You HAVE to go to the Brighton show”. I’m glad I did. Amazing.
3. Autolux – Transit Transit
These guys have only just released their 2nd album after the first one came out in 2004. They have a real west-coast dreamy acid-y vibe to the noise they make but this album has a bit more use of electronic sounds as well as huge waves of guitar.
4. Rolo Tomassi- Cosmology
This is pretty dense stuff but they found a new really spacey element to their sound compared to the first album. Another great, live band who’ve really pushed themselves on the 2nd album to explore something more. Although to be honest they cover more ground musically in one song than most bands cover in 3 albums.
5. Liars – Sisterworld
You never really know quite what this band are going to come back with from one album to the next. I wasn’t that taken with their previous one, but I love “Drums Not Dead” and I really like this one too. Thematically it seems quite inspired by their return from living in Berlin back to LA and I quite like the aggression that seems to have brought out in them.

Our fondness for San Diego’s Crocodiles has been well documented. With a new album scheduled for release this summer featuring production from Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford we expect the upward trajectory of the band to continue. On the heels of the great new single, Summer of Hate, Brandon Welchez reconvened with us to talk about the current direction of the band and what fans can expect.

Sleep Forever by Crocodiles

TDOA: Can you talk a bit about working with James Ford on the the new record and the “sound” people can expect on the new record?  Did James get involved in writing and arrangement or was he there purely to capture the “sound”?

Brandon: The songs were all written before we met up with James, but he definitely helped with arrangements, especially on a couple of the songs we had just written that hadn’t been fully fleshed out yet. As far as the actual sound goes, we decided to work together after meeting up and talking a lot about music and production and a mutual love of dub and krautrock and a lot of the textures and production on those records. He is very talented and was capable of achieving a lot of things we could only hear in our heads and could only express to him in obtuse ways.

TDOA: We just heard the new Darker My Love record and it’s a pretty dramatic musical shift for the band.  Will fans recognize the new Crocodiles record or is there a change in direction for you guys too?

Brandon: I guess that depends on what people hear in our band. We think of ourselves primarily as a band that writes pop songs, but pop songs that we try to wrap up in weirdness and experimentalism. I think for this record we definitely wrote better pop songs but I also think a lot of the weird bits are more interesting than the last time because of a combination of the equipment we had access to and James’ knowledge of analogue noise techniques and tape manipulation and things like that. We feel like it’s still easily recognizable as our band, but a better version. Who knows really though what people will think, everyone hears things differently.

TDOA: The first time I saw Crocodiles, it was just Brandon and Charles.  More recently, you were touring with a full band, including a live drummer (yay!).  Did you bring the full band into the studio and if so, how did that affect the writing process for you guys?

Brandon – No, it was just Charles and I, with James and our trusted friend Jon Greene engineering. The organ player from our live band, Robin, did come in for one day to play some of the organ parts. We aren’t good enough to not play ultra sloppily. She’s really good and we’re not so good at organ ha ha. We just fed her tons of mushrooms and set up a vox jaguar on the roof and let her loose. She also did some vocals, namely the harmonies on Sleep Forever.

TDOA: Brandon, somehow I missed that you were married to Kristin from Dum Dum Girls.  Am I safe in assuming that you met while on tour together?  How has “wedded bliss” worked its way into the lyrics on the new record?

Brandon – We met years before either of us were in our current bands, but yes we met as musicians. There are lyrics about her on the last record and there are songs about her on this one too. I think they’ll be easy to pick out.

TDOA: You’ve added even more great bands to the roster of groups you’ve toured with.  Can you talk about your favorites and share any stories from the road?  We’d be intrigued to here about your experiences with The Horrors.

Brandon – I’ve enjoyed all the bands we’ve toured with. Holy Fuck were particularly inspiring to watch every night. The Horrors were great too and super nice people. They were very generous with us and great to hang out with. Like all bands we’ve had our share of hilarious/frightening/dangerous/etc. experiences but all of our good stories are things I would never share publicly, sorry!

TDOA: The bands notoriety has continually grown in the past year or so.  How do you feel about having to have a management company handling your affairs and bracing yourself for the onslaught of interviews and touring you’re about to embark on?

Brandon – It’s not really any different then it ever was, having a manager just helps us keep everything organized. Plus we’re away so much that no place of work would ever keep us on the payroll. He makes sure we don’t starve to death. Touring is fun, we’re looking forward to all the touring we’ll do for this record. Interviews are fine too because its the only chance we get to actually speak for ourselves and offset mis-truths or rumors or shoot back at the more vicious critics.

We first brought Crocodiles to your attention back in April, when this SoCal 2-pieces’ wall of sound tickled our fancy.  Since then, they’ve appeared on Carson Daly, toured endlessly with a series of great bands and have appeared in all of the cool kids blogs (see briliant Pitchfork reference below).  We don’t want to tell you that we told you so, but this is your last warning before they’re appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone and you’re still playing catch-up.

TDOA: It seems like you’ve been touring non-stop.  Who’ve you enjoyed playing with the most and why?  Is it fun to start playing some larger venues?

Brandon: Yeah, we’ve been on the road pretty much non-stop since March. I’ve enjoyed things about all the bands we’ve played with and we always get along with the other bands.  Holy Fuck were particularly inspiring to play with.

Charles: We have been, it’s been fun getting to know the other bands, getting more and more into their music, becoming friends, and eventually turning the trip into a memorable one. It’s happened four or five times this year.

TDOA: I know you just started The Horrors leg of your tour, but what are your first impressions of the band?  They’ve got a reputation for being a bit stand-offish.  Have you gotten an opportunity to talk with them?

Brandon: I have no idea where that reputation would come from.  We’re less than a week into the tour and we’ve been hanging out tons.  They are all super sweet and really generous.  I think people sometimes mistake shyness for being stand-offish.

Charles: We’re one week in and already having bus parties and exchanging musical theories. They are all very sweet.

TDOA: How did the appearance on Carson Daly come about?  Since it wasn’t filmed on his set, did you get an opportunity to talk to him and hear if he was a fan?

Brandon:I guess one of their talent scouts or something probably found us on the internet.  Not sure really how it came about.  Carson didn’t come to the show, just a film crew.  No idea if he’s a fan, but my assumption is that he isn’t.

TDOA: It’s been over six months since we last spoke.  Getting tired of the Jesus & Mary Chain comparisons, yet?  Do the comparisons to other bands ever make you consider going away from a style that you’re obviously comfortable with or do you ignore those pesky music writers?

Brandon: Honestly, if someone has heard out whole album and still thinks we sound “exactly like Jesus and Mary Chain”, they are either deaf or really, really stupid.  I recognize that sometimes we wear our influences pretty clearly on our sleeve… but that’s something I really love about other bands.  Didn’t JAMC wear their Velvet Underground influence pretty clearly?  An you have to remember that a huge amount of these so-caled music writers are just idiots with a computer at their house who beat off to Pitchfork (Editors Note:  God Bless Crocodiles!).  The only changes we make as a band are self-motivated.

TDOA: Any talks of signing with a larger label or recording new material and are you thinking about applying for SXSW?

Brandon: We’re still happy with Fat Possum. We’ll be recording another album in January and February, so hopefully that’ll be out sometime in the springWe’ll be at SXSW too…

1) The Boxer Rebellion: Union- If you loved The Verve and remember when it was still cool to like U2, you ought to be listening to this band.  This self-released album topped the U.S. and U.K. ITunes charts the week it debuted.  I’d like to think that TBR is our little secret, but I suspect there are a lot of you out there.

2) The Pains of Being Pure At Heart: Self-Titled- As British as The Boxer Rebellion sound, THOBPAH bring a sound that is distinctly super American chunky.  Great melodies that merge with an indie sensibility that is far from self-indulgent.

3) Gliss: Devotion/Implosion- Like watching the most beautiful carousel you’ve ever seen, Gliss switch instruments and vocal duties effortlessly and make you swoon every time.  How much do I love the re-emergence of the distortion pedal in music?  In a year where the great ideas of the 80′s are given new life, Gliss simulatneously seem original yet nostalgic.  I hate to throw the  JAMC reference around this list too much, but they were a brilliant band and Gliss make me realize what they’d have  become with better vocals and less self-indulgence.

4) An Horse: Rearrange Beds- 2-piece from Australia that harkens back to the best of The Spinanes (look it up.  you’ll love it.).  I interviewed them days after they first arrived in America after this album was released.  With an appearance on Letterman and accolades from numerous magazines, we can expect An Horse to be on many year-end lists for many years to come.  Deservedly so.

5) White Lies- To Lose My Life: Equal parts The Teardrop Explodes, Joy Division and Interpol.  Certainly enough to make Brandon Flowers shut up forever (hopefully…).  I had predicted that this would be my album of the year after hearing a few cuts.  If I have any complaint, it’s that the second half of the record is a little uneven.  Still a tremendous effort, though.

6) Zee Avi- Zee Avi-  This one snuck on the list at the last second!  I posted her brilliant cover of “First of the Gang” previously and just got a copy of the album this week.  Since then, I’ve had it on an endless loop.  Prepare to here a voice that will melt you in a second.  To compare someone’s voice to Billie Holiday isn’t something I would do on a whim.  The album alternates from moody, to playful, to beautiful in a way that seems natural.  An amazing debut.  Prepare to read about her for the next six months and the rest of your life.

7) East Hundred- Passenger: Erroneously posted in our revised ‘Best of 2008′, this was actually released in January of 2009.  Why this band isn’t on a major label is one of this years’ great mysteries.  Perfect vocal melodies from Beril Guceri coupled with a band that can write music that isn’t dependent on ‘hooks’, yet sticks in your head.  Quite a combination and a recipe for a great album.

Crocodiles- Summer of Hate: Fresh off their network debut on Carson Daly’s televsion show, this is a band with unbelievable potential.  Their resemblence to Psychocandy/ Mary Chain-style is eerie.  When they release their ‘Darklands’ expect them to be huge.

9) Jason Lytle- Yours Truly The Commuter: Yes, it’s the singer from Grandaddy.  Yes, it’s as good as anything Grandaddy did.  Anything other questions?

10) Gomez- A New Tide: I’ve intentionally posted this video which just shows the album cover, while the opening track plays.  Perhaps the best “pop” song I’ve heard in years.  Close your eyes and let this soak into your eardrums.
